Sex and Politics: Marriage Equality, Children Studies, and Bradley Manning

Join Sex and Politics, this week we had Paolo Cremedis give us an update on the push for marriage equality and attempts to repeal legislation in opposition to marriage equality, such as the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and Proposition 8 in California. Brooklyn College’s Coordinator and Director of the Children’s Studies program PhD Gertrude Lenzer joined us via telephone for a discussion about the precarious situation of the Children’s Studies program due to its lack of faculty, and the College’s apparent reluctance to continue to support the program with no explanation. Our new senior producer Dan Kinch closed out our show with an update on the Bradley Manning case, including Icelandic parliament member (and Wikileaks contributor) Birgitta Jonsdottir’s diplomatic visit to the US to support Manning.Birgitta_Jonsdottir2_.jpg

Fear of Drones and Fear of Birds

Join Sex and Politics, this week Dan Kinch interviewed longtime peace activist Marc Saviano about the ongoing protests against the Drone Strike program. Saviano is a board member for KCPeaceworks and has also organized for Occupy Kansas City, as well as the peace group Trifecta Resista.

Paulo Cremedis addressed some controversial statements he made at the AIPAC National Public Policy Conference. Paulo also sat down with producer Lauren Keating and discussed NYPIRG's recent lobbying effort in Albany to secure funding for higher education. Lastly, Dr. Denis Burke joined the sex and politics crew via telephone for a discussion on the five greatest fears of human existence. Dr. Burke also attempted to help Paulo come to terms with his fear of birds and Lauren resolve a fear of stairs.DrDenisBurke.jpg

Join Sex and politics-Arts as we bring you Classical and Contemporary pianist Boris Lemeshev. Boris was gracious enough to take us through our segues with some of his delightful piano pieces. Yvonne Juris interviewed Selisse Berry the founding executive director of Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, the world's largest nonprofit organization specifically dedicated to creating safe and equitable workplaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

In addition, we had a very special interview between the always soulful poet Joseph Wade and the equally talented writer Ed Kearns, both of whom were recently featured in a televised creative writing event in Pennsylvania. To close the arts section we had a moving duet between our guest pianist Boris Lemeshev and our very own arts producer and flutist Yvonne Juris.EdKearns.jpg

Join Sex and Politics, this week we bring you Dr. Scott Bender via telephone to for a discussion on the medical efficacy of the relatively new upright MRI technology. Dan Kinch interviewed activist Clare Donohue one of the founders of the Sane Energy Project for an update on the actions of Sane Energy Project. Clare discussed the ongoing attempts to construct a gas pipeline up 10th avenue up to 15th street, and Sane Energy Projects opposition to it.

Defense attorney Tim Parlatore joined us as a returning guest for a rousing discussion on the 2nd Amendment, and the role of the military in domestic law enforcement. Unfortunately due to some technical difficulties we lost the final moments of the show which contained an interesting discussion on the use of drone technology.
