Definitely believe that that you said. Your favorite justification appeared to
be on the net the easiest factor to be mindful
of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed at the same time as other people consider concerns that they
just don't know about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing with no need side-effects , people could take a signal. Will likely be again to get more. Thanks

Correction to the above: It has been correctly pointed out that the US Army administers Ft. Leavenworth. The confusion results from Pfc Clagett's initial incarceration having been administered by the US Navy, but NOT in Ft. Leavenworth.

However, Pfc Clagett is at this moment, imprisoned within Ft. Leavenworth.

Hi Rachel,

Thanks for your well thought out comment. I'm not sure I (Phil) agree with the whole of it. Particularly the part about people not thinking animals can feel pain. If you inflict pain on an animal, it can only be obvious that the animal is feeling it by its scream. The more salient issue might be that people are pretty easily emotionally calloused.

Much depends on your environment I would think. If you walk past homeless people every day, can you really be expected to help each and every one? Too, at some point most people will stop seeing the homeless people altogether. They will become part of the buildings and sidewalks, another poster or a piece of floating trash. Yet they suffer.

My point isn't that dogs and/or other animals aren't worth saving, only that I think its pretty normal as a human reaction, to become inured to the suffering of "others" - whether others be animal or man, if sufficiently exposed to it.

Best,
Philip

Hi i am Sara's sister in Colorado; i would like to add a response to the issue of "why dogs instead of...?"
I agree with Sara about the basic premise of "if you see suffering that you can aleviate, why don't you?" but i also want to more directly address "why animals?": Sara touched on the fact that there are people and organizations all over the world that help people and i think that is a good reminder.
But the key point is that there are a LOT of people, i would dare to say the majority of people as evidenced by the legal standing of animals as property, the use of animals in research and the way animal agriculture is conducted, who don't think of animals as worthy of saving. People who, for various philosophical or religious reasons or purely from lack of any clearer thinking or purity of soul, believe that humans are at the apex of the hierarchy of life. There are still people who actually believe animals CANNOT feel pain; who ignore the suffering of animals because they do not believe those animals suffer.
Sara mentioned that pigs are smarter than dogs and are treated horrifically in confined feeding operations - because people who use those lives to product the pork that consumers want to eat are willing to subvert the needs of the sentient being to pure economics, they are willing to pretend that those pigs feel no pain or mental anguish when confined to crates that restrict their movement absolutely.
Sara indeed has a talent and a drive for rescuing dogs. I have worked with several rescues here in Colorado and she has been more successful, when gauged by sheer numbers saved, in her 1.5 years of work than some groups are in 10; to be fair, we do not have the population concentration of NY or even just Brooklyn, and we certainly don't have anyone with the energy or drive (or credit line, apparently!) to devote the time and effort she has. I have also managed to foster dogs who were for various reasons, difficult to adopt out, pairs who needed to stay together, older dogs, black dogs, herding breeds, behaviourly challenged, etc.
I will go out on a limb and presume to say that Sara agrees with me in thinking that humans are not more valuable than the other species of life and that is, ultimately, why she rescues dogs. She has seen that there is a need that is not being met by the other well meaning people who work for change in the world and has stepped up to meet that need: she, I, the rescues i work with, the rescues she has partnered with, and the rest.
A favorite cliche of sorts (in a good way) of animal rescue people is that animals have no voice, no way to ask for help, we have to be their voice and step up. I feel that there are people who step up for humans, whether i prefer the company of animals to most humans (which i do) is really beside the point - i don't do this because i am antisocial (even if that is also true  ) but because there is a need that isn't being filled by someone else.

I feel that there are people who step up for humans, whether i prefer the company of animals to most humans (which i do) is really beside the point - i don’t do this because i am antisocial (even if that is also true ) but because there is a need that isn’t being filled by someone else.

The broadcast isn't open to the general public. Unfortunately we just don't have enough room for seating. However 11/3, David Harris will be on the air with several other folks discussing the question of whether or not God is real.

To catch that broadcast live the best thing to do is like the Sex and Politics facebook page. It'll give you all the relevant updates. That link would be www.facebook.com/sexandpolitics

Best,
