Lauren Keating brought us a brief news update featuring: International, National, local news pieces; which was followed by a short discussion about the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. To close out our politics portion Dan Kinch interviewed Occupy Sandy member Goldie Degaria about the ongoing efforts of Occupy Sandy to revitalize areas adversely affected by “Super Storm Sandy;” in addition, Dan was kind enough to give us an update on the ongoing trial of Sister Megan Rice and the Y12 Nuclear weapons facility protesters.

The Weekly Face Slap! This week we slapped down the issue of forced fellatio due to an incident of oral sex forcibly performed on rapper Danny Brown at a live concert courtesy of a crazed fan. This was followed by a firm slap-shot from Paolo Cremedis on Pennsylvania State Senator Darrell Metcalf for saying the MTA is “public welfare” and comments he made about homosexuals. Phil Rosenberg domestic chin slapped SexndPolitics producer Dan Kinch for a controversial meme he posted; and lastly, SexandPolitics technical guru Charles Carr discussed the “rail gun” and did a strip tease for us! Join Sex and Politics- Tonight’s Arts segments featured play write and Sex and Politics producer Dan Kinch. Dan discussed his socially conscious theater work; some of which will be featured at the Lower East Side Festival of The Arts. Sex and Politics- Arts (Literature) producer Joseph Wade held a short poetry slam featuring pieces and interviews with three very talented poets: Angie Knott, Don Lias, and Carla Christopher.

For the politics portion of Sex and Politics Dan Kinch interviewed Debra Sweet, a longtime activist and director of the group The World Can’t Wait, about her organization’s campus outreach on abortion rights and their protests around the Guantanamo prisoners’ hunger strikes. Paolo Cremidis reported on the strike by fast-food workers in NY. To close out tonight’s show Lauren, Yvonne, Paolo, and Richard sat down for a panel discussion on the media coverage of the Boston bombing and first amendment rights in schools. In addition, Lauren and Paolo interviewed Sue of Sue Rocks Originals Everyone Inc; an organization that donates fabric to the victims of domestic violence.

Join Sex and Politics, this week we had Paolo Cremedis give us an update on the push for marriage equality and attempts to repeal legislation in opposition to marriage equality, such as the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and Proposition 8 in California. Brooklyn College’s Coordinator and Director of the Children’s Studies program PhD Gertrude Lenzer joined us via telephone for a discussion about the precarious situation of the Children’s Studies program due to its lack of faculty, and the College’s apparent reluctance to continue to support the program with no explanation. Our new senior producer Dan Kinch closed out our show with an update on the Bradley Manning case, including Icelandic parliament member (and Wikileaks contributor) Birgitta Jonsdottir’s diplomatic visit to the US to support Manning.

Join Sex and Politics-Arts! CUNY Professor and fiction writer Chris Ross joined us for an interview via telephone to share some of his wonderfully crafted writing, as well as a brief discussion on his fiction writing experience. Our exceptionally talented Poet in residence Joseph Wade shared with us a portion of a new book he has been working on, centered on his incredible military career. To close out our Arts portion host Phil Rosenberg proudly announced that Joseph will be returning as the new Producer of the Arts section of Sex and Politics. Congratulations Joe!

The Weekly Face Slap goes down south! John Schiavone slapped the peaches out of Wilcox County Georgia for their opposition to racially integrated high school proms. Paolo Cremedis took a southern slap-shot at the Governor of Virginia for trying to enact an anti-sodomy law. Pat Robertson was also on the slapping-block this week for essentially being Pat Robertson. Robertson’s slapping was followed by a slap fight of a discussion over the merits of Shariah Law. Join Sex and Politics for this week’s extra special show dedicated to women’s health. This week Dan Kinch interviewed Dr. James Brophy, a researcher who has had his work featured in the breast cancer documentary Pink Ribbon Inc. Dr. Brophy joined us to discuss some alarming links he found between pre-menopausal breast cancer, and workplace exposure to chemicals like BPA and other endocrine disrupters. This was followed by Lauren Keating interviewing naturopathic doctor Donese Worden for an eye-opening conversation on the effects of various chemicals and hormones within our foods supply on rates of breast cancer and women’s reproductive health. Paolo Cremidis brought our show to a close with some alarming figures about female mortality rates currently released by the World Health Organization. Lastly, Loretta Chin gave us a brief update on the ongoing Stop-and-Frisk trial.

Join Sex and Politics-Arts for a very special show held in honor of women’s history month and VDay. Listen as author Nava Renek, and hosts Phill Rosenberg and Yvonne Juris went toe-to-toe to tackle the issue of female objectification, as well as engaged in a discussion on genderized art, and breaking the glass ceiling in the arts. We also had film Major Judy Kenny in studio. Judy graced us with some her light hearted humor. Judy also provided some unique insight into film production, and her journey to both resist and learn from a male dominated field. Finally, to close our show dedicated to women and women’s issues we were treated with a surprise rendition of “I Was There,” which is a moving portrayal of the pain and awe of childbirth from The Vagina Monologues. I Was There was performed by Yvonne’s lovely mother, Jeannie Juris, whose rendition brought the show to a profoundly eloquent, and wonderfully estrogenical close.

The Weekly Face Slap laid a harsh slap-down on Senator Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, and the daily news courtesy of “The Mouth of the South” John Schiavone. Join Sex and Politics, this week Dan Kinch interviewed longtime peace activist Marc Saviano about the ongoing protests against the Drone Strike program. Saviano is a board member for KCPeaceworks and has also organized for Occupy Kansas City, as well as the peace group Trifecta Resista.

Paulo Cremedis addressed some controversial statements he made at the AIPAC National Public Policy Conference. Paulo also sat down with producer Lauren Keating and discussed NYPIRG’s recent lobbying effort in Albany to secure funding for higher education. Lastly, Dr. Denis Burke joined the sex and politics crew via telephone for a discussion on the five greatest fears of human existence. Dr. Burke also attempted to help Paulo come to terms with his fear of birds and Lauren resolve a fear of stairs.

Join Sex and politics-Arts as we bring you Classical and Contemporary pianist Boris Lemeshev. Boris was gracious enough to take us through our segues with some of his delightful piano pieces. Yvonne Juris interviewed Selisse Berry the founding executive director of Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, the world’s largest nonprofit organization specifically dedicated to creating safe and equitable workplaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

In addition, we had a very special interview between the always soulful poet Joseph Wade and the equally talented writer Ed Kearns, both of whom were recently featured in a televised creative writing event in Pennsylvania. To close the arts section we had a moving duet between our guest pianist Boris Lemeshev and our very own arts producer and flutist Yvonne Juris.

Join Sex and Politics, this week we bring you Dr. Scott Bender via telephone to for a discussion on the medical efficacy of the relatively new upright MRI technology. Dan Kinch interviewed activist Clare Donohue one of the founders of the Sane Energy Project for an update on the actions of Sane Energy Project. Clare discussed the ongoing attempts to construct a gas pipeline up 10^th avenue up to 15^th street, and Sane Energy Projects opposition to it.

Defense attorney Tim Parlatore joined us as a returning guest for a rousing discussion on the 2^nd Amendment, and the role of the military in domestic law enforcement. Unfortunately due to some technical difficulties we lost the final moments of the show which contained an interesting discussion on the use of drone technology. We apologize to our listeners and to Mr. Parlatore for that.

Join Sex and Politics as we bring you Sr. Megan Rice via telephone. Sr. Rice is currently one of three people facing several years in prison for unlawfully entering and vandalizing the Y12 enriched uranium storage facility in a brazen act of opposition to nuclear proliferation.

This past Thursday also heralded the return of Poet In Residence, Joseph Wade, who shared some of his latest poetry and agreed to return every week to do the same. Welcome home, Joe!

In addition, correspondent Loretta Chin discussed her latest piece on a controversial incident out of the Bronx, where a 7 year old boy was allegedly handcuffed by the NYPD for several hours due to allegations of  petty theft [correction from “bullying”] between him and another child.

Joe Sena also joined us in studio to discuss morality in the media but was quickly cut short by the intrepid Paulo Cremidis addressing the newfound anti-SJP (Students for Justice in Palestine) graffiti that appeared on Brooklyn College campus.

Mathew Cameron - Classical Pianist

Renown pianist Matthew Cameron joined us for the discussion on the inspiration behind great works and the inextricable influences of social currents, calamities and personal strife. A studio rendition of Chopin’s Revolutionary etude flowered into a full debate on how certain works of art transcend one historical event, becoming symbols of current issues.

Memorable Moment; Cameron’s painstaking admission at Philip Rosenberg’s prompting, that mixing classical music with rap for commercial appeal was like mixing fine wine with “coke”. Not fair to either the wine or the cola.

Mathew Cameron, composer, and a champion of works by Chopin and Liszt has performed at Carnegie Hall, Salle Erad in Paris, and was personally invited to perform for Duke Niccolo Capponi in Italy. In his 2008 Weill Hall debut at Carnegie Hall, the New York Concert Review spoke of Cameron as “resembling Franz Liszt from the stage…he distinguished himself from his many brilliant peers by projecting a composer’s command of his repertoire.” He has three CD’s released on Arabesesque records.

Phil Nerges worked as a quality inspector of services provided to the Army in the Iraq war zone for 20 months between 2004 and 2007. After returning home in 2007, 57 year-old Nerges felt disconnected and uncertain as to whether he wanted to take another overseas contracting position. Choosing instead to take a sabbatical to write, he found his way to the vaudeville scene in Greenwich Village and a musical partnership with Vic Ruggiero. Vic Ruggiero is a musician and songwriter from New York City, known best as a member of the band The Slackers. While looking for solo material, he found himself paired with Phil Nerges, and an unlikely, but wonderful, partnership was formed. Ruggiero wrote and arranged the music on their album Don’t Feed the Cats in Iraq.

Roman Rojas is an innovative singer/songwriter/producer from Caracas, Venezuela living in New York City. Roman also produces several artists, including the innovative Latin/World/Pop band Rioh.

Ingredients:

Squash of your choice

4 tsp of balsamic vinegar

4 tsp olive oil

salt and pepper

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut your squash in half length wise and set seeds to the side. Dress squash in Balsamic vinegar and olive oil; salt and pepper to taste. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes. Eat and Enjoy!

For the seeds: Preheat oven to 245 degrees. Pat seeds dry, wet with olive oil, and roast as a thin layer on a baking sheet for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Makes a great snack!

Brooklyn College Professor Miguel Macias is reporting live from Sevilla, Spain, giving us an update on what’s going on in Europe. Originally from Sevillea, Spain, Miguel moved to the US in 2001. He is a radio producer, sound designer, musician and video producer based in Brooklyn.

Donte Wright da storyteller, a writer/poet/storyteller who is a Desert Storm veteran who served 4 years in the U.S. Navy, started writing in the mid 80’s with a teen hip hop group. Poet and Psychologist Richard Bargdill

Our second guest is Virginia Commonwealth University associate professor of psychology Richard Bargdill. Bargdill found his passion for creating art, poetry, and music after being inspired by a graduate psychology class in his 20s. In our interview, we discuss the link between psychology and art, and he reads his stream of consciousness poem Highway Thoughts for us.
